New Year’s 2017

New Year’s 2017

#17 started off the year right with a win in the (stand alone, first race of year 2017) “Past Commodore’s” race at Manhasset Bay YC’s 86th Annual Frostbite regatta.  In the overall, #17 was 1 point behind boat #31 after day 1 on Saturday Dec 31st.  #17 sailed New Year’s Day to a 2 point lead on the water, however, in race 10 (of 12) there was a collision (tap from behind with #31’s bow to #17’s rudder).   #17 sailing by the lee was able to surf waves in attempt to try to cross from a windward position and in front of #31.  In a highly contested run, overlapped back and forth in marginal surfing conditions, #17 was the boat with onus to establish the overlap broken and “needed to have immediately” declared such in no uncertain terms.  With differing views and no external witness (or drone) #31’s position was stronger in that #17 needed to establish whether the collision was lateral or longitudinal to the boats’ path.  #17 was disqualified, however, still ended up 2nd overall 10 points ahead of lasts year’s Rolex Yachtsman of the year, Steve Benjamin.  Congratulations to Simon Strauss who by winning the New Year’s regatta takes the lead in the Interclub Class overall standings, Wharf Rat perpetual award donated by the Benjamin’s in 2006.
